A Guide to Trenchless Pipe Repair

Sewer line issues are the kind of nightmare that no property owner wants to face. Not only is there the anxiety of potential water damage and the inconvenience of halted plumbing, but traditional repair methods can leave your yard looking like a war zone. What good is fixing an underground pipe if it means tearing up your meticulously maintained lawn, garden, or even driveway?

Fortunately, there’s good news: there are modern, minimally invasive techniques for sewer line repairs that save your yard from all the mayhem. It’s called trenchless sewer repair. In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we explore this innovative approach to pipe repairs and replacements.

What is trenchless pipe repair?

As the name suggests, trenchless pipe repair allows plumbers to fix or replace pipes without extensive digging. Unlike traditional methods which require excavating long stretches of lawn to access the entire length of the pipe, trenchless repair requires only a few small access points. Specialists can insert advanced tools and materials through these openings to repair or replace the damaged line below ground.

Two of the most common methods in trenchless pipe repair are pipe lining and pipe bursting. Each has unique advantages but share one important quality: neither involves extensive yard damage.

Introducing pipe lining and pipe bursting

PIPE LINING: Also known as cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining, this method involves creating a “pipe within a pipe.” In this approach, a flexible tube coated with resin is inserted into the damaged pipe. Once in place, the tube is inflated to fit tightly against the walls of the old pipe. After a few hours, the resin cures to create a solid lining that seals any cracks, leaks, or weak spots in the original pipe.

PIPE BURSTING: This is often the answer when a pipe is too damaged for lining. This technique involves breaking apart the old pipe and simultaneously pulling a new pipe into its place. Using specialized machinery, technicians pull a bursting head through the existing pipe to shatter it. Meanwhile, a new pipe is installed seamlessly behind this bursting head – all in one fell swoop.

When to consider trenchless repair options

Pipe lining is ideal for pipes with minor cracks, corrosion, or small leaks while pipe bursting is the go-to option when considering a complete trenchless sewer line replacement. Pipe bursting is suitable for severely damaged pipes, pipes with structural issues, or those that need to be upsized (increased in diameter).

If you’re dealing with tree root intrusions, corrosion and rusting, or aging and broken sewer lines, then it might be worth consulting a trained and experienced plumber. Replacing those pipes could be more cost-effective than arranging constant repairs or patching up symptoms.
