How to Reset a Garbage Disposal for Smooth Operation

Garbage disposals might be a little noisy, but they help prevent the most irritating of plumbing issues: kitchen sink backups. By breaking down waste into more digestible pieces for the drains, these devices reduce the risk of clogs and blockages.

As reliable as they are, garbage disposals can use a hand every now and then. Many times, a simple reset can be enough to get the overwhelmed unit back on track.

In this brief article brought to you by Mr. Rooter Plumbing, we offer a guide to getting your garbage disposal back to peak performance with little to no plumbing required! If you do need garbage disposal repair, then call Mr. Rooter to hire a trained and uniformed plumber.

Signs that your garbage disposal needs attention

How do you fix something if you don’t know it’s broken? Before we get to the reset process, let’s learn to recognize when your garbage disposal is asking for help. Here are some telltale signs:

  • If you flip the switch and hear nothing.
  • If it’s humming but not grinding.
  • If the sink drains slowly or not at all.
  • If you get a whiff of foul odors from the drain opening.

With that said, let’s roll up our sleeves and get your garbage disposal installation running smoothly again.

Safety FIRST!

Before you do anything, take a minute to ensure safety. A garbage disposal is a powerful device with sharp blades. It’s also electric powered. As you know, electricity and water make for a deadly combination. Follow these precautions:

  • Switch off the disposal and unplug it from the outlet under your sink. If you can’t access the plug, then flip the circuit breaker that powers it.
  • Use tools like tongs or pliers if you need to remove anything from the disposal. Never stick your hand inside.

Try the reset button

Let’s start with the most obvious. Most garbage disposals are equipped with a built-in reset button often located at the bottom of the unit.

Locate the small red or black button on the underside of the disposal and press it back in firmly if the button is popped out. Restore power by plugging the unit back in before turning on the disposal to test it.

Free up a jammed flywheel

If the reset button doesn’t do the trick and the unit still hums without grinding, you may have a jammed flywheel. Here’s what to do:

  • Locate the Allen wrench slot or hex key slot.
  • Place the wrench in the slot and turn it clockwise and counterclockwise. This should manually rotate the flywheel and dislodge any debris.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect the disposal. If you spot any trapped items, use tongs to remove them.

Once you’ve cleared out the gunk, it’s worth giving your garbage disposal a cleaning. Toss a few ice cubes into the unit and run the device. This can harden grease and send it down the drains.

Clear clogs in the drain

If your garbage disposal is draining slowly or not at all, the problem might not be the unit itself but a clog in the drain line. Whip out the handy-dandy plunger and put the elbow grease to work. For more stubborn blockages, disconnect the P-trap (the U-shaped pipe under the sink) and clear any debris manually.

Hire a plumber

If these methods do not help, then consider hiring a plumber in Woodway for the job. The uniformed professionals at Mr. Rooter Plumbing have plenty of experiencing not only installing but also repairing and replacing garbage disposals.
