Plumbing Terminology 101

Jargon is specialized language used to efficiently communicate relevant complex ideas or concepts. These terminologies are used within specific professions, fields, or groups – and plumbing is no exception.

There is a lot of plumbing lingo that the average person might not understand, and we are going to touch on some of them in this article brought to you by Mr. Rooter Plumbing. If you’d rather speak with a trained plumber, then call Mr. Rooter Plumbing to get in touch at any time of the day.

The Trap

A trap is a curved section of a drainpipe that prevents sewer gases from entering buildings. It is fundamental in maintaining hygiene and preventing unpleasant odors from consuming your living space. It works by holding a small amount of water that creates a seal against sewer gases. The most common type you’ll encounter is the P-trap, found under sinks and other fixtures.

The Flange

A flange is a vital plumbing fitting that connects a toilet to the floor, and the drainpipe. It ensures stability and a secure seal, thereby preventing leaks. When installing or repairing a toilet, it is essential that the flange is correctly positioned and intact for the overall function of the fixture.

Soldering

Soldering is the process of joining two metal pipes together using a filler metal with a lower melting point than the workpieces. This technique is commonly used with copper pipes, typically in order to create a watertight seal. Proper soldering ensures a durable connection that can withstand the pressures and temperatures of regular water flow.

A Snake

A plumbing snake, also known as a drain auger, is a long, flexible tool used to clear blockages in pipes. Unlike chemical drain cleaners, a snake can physically dislodge clogs without damaging pipes. It's a go-to tool for plumbers when dealing with stubborn clogs that a plunger can't fix.

Bonus: Snaking refers to using the plumbing snake to dislodge blockages.

The Vent Stack

The vent stack, or plumbing vent, is a vertical pipe that allows sewer gases to escape and fresh air to enter the plumbing system. This ventilation is crucial for maintaining proper pressure and ensuring that drains flow freely. Without a vent stack, your plumbing system could suffer from slow drainage and harmful gas buildup.

The Backflow Preventer

This device is installed in the plumbing system to prevent contaminated water from flowing backward into the clean water supply. This is critical for protecting the water supply from potential pollutants. Regular testing and maintenance are necessary to ensure they’re working properly.

Water Hammer

Water hammer refers to the loud banging noise that results when water flow is suddenly stopped or changed. This phenomenon can damage pipes and fixtures if not addressed. Solutions include installing water hammer arrestors, which absorb the shock and reduce noise and potential damage.

The Aerator

An aerator is a small device attached to the end of a faucet. It mixes air with the water stream, effectively reducing splashing, conserving water, and improving water pressure. Aerators are easy to install and can be a quick fix for improving the efficiency of your faucets.
