What Is the Sewer Line?

The sewer line is the plumbing that connects your building’s drain line to the public sewer system. This piping runs across the property, lateral to the public road. Many property owners mistakenly think the sewer line is the city’s responsibility, but the sewer line on your property is your responsibility! Those monthly sewer bills only cover the sewer system on public property!

Taking Care of the Sewer Line

Whether it’s for the drain line or the sewer line, the plumbing etiquette is unchanged. You should always be careful with what you flush down the toilet or pour in the sinks. Avoid bar soap as its chunks can form globs in the drain line or sewer line. Similarly, do NOT pour used fats, oils, and greases down the kitchen sink. These pipes are only a couple of inches in diameter and they are vulnerable to clogging!

As for the sewer line specifically, you should avoid installing large, heavy structures over the sewer line. And don’t drive over or park on the sewer line! Finally, schedule sewer line cleaning once every 2-3 years to eliminate gunk, muck, and other buildup in the sewer line.

Watch Out for These Signs of a Faulty or Damaged Sewer Line!

Practice mindfulness in both using the sewer line and inspecting it. Be careful what you allow down the drains, but also be on the lookout for signs of trouble. Here are some warning signs to be wary of:

• Slow drainage or backups in multiple toilets, sinks, and drains.
• Areas with unusually green or lush grass.
• Soggy or sunken patches around the yard.
• Puddles of rancid water in the area.
• Smell of sewage.
• Insect and rodent infestations.
• Cracked driveway, walkway, or foundation.
