What Causes a Refrigerator to Leak Water?

Picture this: you’re half-awake walking through your kitchen in the morning with coffee in your hand when your sock suddenly squishes on the floor. You look down and notice a puddle of water surrounds your refrigerator. Your first thought might be, Who spilled something? But if the puddle is growing, you’ll discover the refrigerator is the likely culprit.

Water leaks are a nuisance as they are, but they are especially urgent when it involves the appliance keeping your food cold and safe. Your friends at Mr. Rooter Plumbing put together this brief article to explore the common causes.

If you’d rather have a trained and experienced plumber investigate the leak, then contact Mr. Rooter to hire a uniformed professional. Our team is on standby to take your call or message today.

The drip pan overflowing

Most refrigerators have a drip pan located at the bottom to collect condensation and allow it to evaporate. Under normal circumstances, the drip pan handles this task like a champ. If it’s damaged, dislodged, or overflowing, however, then water can spill onto your floor.

This is typically an easy fix. Locate the drip pan and carefully pull it out to inspect for cracks and overfill; it’s typically found behind the grille at the base of the fridge. If it’s full, then empty it and clean it with soap and water before putting it back. If the pan is damaged, replace it with a new one.

Clogged or frozen defrost drain

The defrost drain is another common troublemaker. During your fridge’s defrost cycle, melted water flows down a small drain tube and into the drip pan. However, some food debris, dust, or even mold can block the drain over time. In colder climates, the drain may freeze entirely. With nowhere else to go, the water will back up and pool inside the fridge before leaking out onto your floor.

Get in the habit of checking the defrost drain for blockages. If clogged, then use a turkey baster or pipe cleaner to flush it out with warm and soapy water. If it’s frozen, gently thaw it using hot water or a hairdryer.

Leaky water supply line

If your refrigerator has a built-in ice maker or water dispenser, then the unit will have a water supply line. These lines are usually thin plastic tubes connected to your home’s plumbing. As you can imagine, these pipes can crack, loosen, or develop tiny leaks over time.

Move the fridge slightly away from the wall and inspect the water line for any visible damage or loose connections. Tighten loose connections and replace cracked or damaged water supply lines.

If there is a leak in the plumbing pipes instead, then have a plumber handle it. Mr. Rooter is proud to offer quick and affordable water leak repair.

Excess humidity or temperature changes

Sometimes, the problem isn’t the fridge but rather the environment. High humidity or sudden temperature changes can cause condensation to build up on the refrigerator. This moisture eventually drips down and pools at the base.

Keep your kitchen well-ventilated and maintain a consistent indoor temperature. If your refrigerator has a humidity control setting, then adjust it to minimize moisture buildup.

None of the above? Call Mr. Rooter

If you are still scratching your head, then call Mr. Rooter Plumbing to have a plumber investigate. We are proud to offer leak detection services that will uncover the root cause of leaks. We’ll also make sure the leak is not affecting other parts of the plumbing.

Our team is on standby to take your call and schedule an appointment or arrange urgent plumbing service for as soon as possible.
